about

This track was a lot of fun to make. My good friend and fellow produce Tony McCree (aka John McClane) put the instrumental together, years ago. Once I heard it, I had to write to it. The old Whispers sample of "Lost and Turned Out (Olivia)" simply spoke of the type of warning that would come from Christians.

From the wayward young girl, to the dope dealing young thug, and even the unfaithful husband, this song has something for everyone facing real life struggles.

lyrics

Intro
Back in the day, her grandma took her to church on every Sunday
Hoping and praying she would submit to God one day
A wild child, always itchin’ to fight
She struggled daily makin’ that choice between wrong and right
But now…

Verse 1
She’s sixteen, already sinnin’ like adults do
Broken home she’s got nothin’ to look forward to
Lustin’ after money was her heart’s real joy
The first chance she got, she went and hooked up with a dope boy

Fast cars; shiny things; she was livin’ that life
Yoked to the game; she was sin’s own wife
Rollin’ up that joint, they passed it down the line
She took a toke up on that poison and it blew her mind

Next, she was cracked out, pipe blown; jacked out
Steady doin’ wrong; that money was still long
Seein’ friends die young didn’t stop her flow
‘Cause livin’ fast and dyin’ young was the only way to go

But soon her heart could only take so much
Her beauty faded; spirit jaded; and she lost her touch
Pushin’ in that needle; veins burned too long;
Now she’s gone.

Chorus
Don’t follow the world’s definition of fame
The devil’s comin’ to kill, and its your life he’ll claim
Don’t follow the world’s definition of fame
‘Cause satan’s seekin’ to destroy and its your life he’ll claim
Don’t follow the world’s definition of fame
Judas sold out Jesus; don’t do the same
Don’t follow the world’s definition of fame
Refrain

Verse 2
Three thirty in the mornin’ still slangin’ at the dope spot
Got your night vision on, ‘cause your block’s hot
Glock strapped tight; money right; not a cop in sight
You lookin’ ‘round, like everything’s alright

But, around the way, a plan’s put into play
The task force is comin’ to get ‘cha; ‘bout to ruin your day
While you keep shirkin’ the Lord; you ain’t got no time for God
To busy runnin’ with satan; keepin; up the façade

They’ve got the gats cocked; while you’re slangin’ rocks
Creepin’ up the street; totin’ the heat
You’re doin’ wrong and it won’t be long
Before your momma’s on the front pue, lamentin’ to a sad song

Leanin’ on the brick wall countin’ your cash
You never heard ‘em run up on you; never saw the shots flash
Now you’re lyin’ on the concrete, losin’ your breath
And realize you’re about to face a spiritual death

Chorus
Don’t follow the world’s definition of fame
The devil’s comin’ to kill, and its your life he’ll claim
Don’t follow the world’s definition of fame
‘Cause satan’s seekin’ to destroy and its your life he’ll claim
Don’t follow the world’s definition of fame
Judas sold out Jesus; don’t do the same
Don’t follow the world’s definition of fame
Refrain

Verse 3
He’s tired of copin’ with his wife’s funky attitude
Hit the streets, lookin’ for someone in a better mood
Late night creepin’, and his phone keeps beepin’
Even though this cat is yoked, he’s steady lyin’ to folks

Found a Jezebel to get close to
Unprotected sex was on the menu
Did the deed in private; got away with the sin
He thought the drama was over but its about to begin

Its now seven years past and the marriage is blessed
He gave his life over to Christ, and got the stress off his chest
But, one day his got the toys spread all over the floor
While playin’ with his little boy, there was a knock at the door

Nobody there; just a cursive note
Took the page, looked it over, and he almost choked
Written in black letters for his wife to see
The note read, “I’m positive for H.I.V.”

Chorus
Don’t follow the world’s definition of fame
The devil’s comin’ to kill, and its your life he’ll claim
Don’t follow the world’s definition of fame
‘Cause satan’s seekin’ to destroy and its your life he’ll claim
Don’t follow the world’s definition of fame
Judas sold out Jesus; don’t do the same
Don’t follow the world’s definition of fame
Refrain

Outro
Make no mistake, this is a Christian track
To let you know that followin’ sin into the end is wack
Don’t follow the world’s definition of fame
‘Cause satan’s prowlin’ to hack, destroy, bully and maim.

about

Ennis (Bro. E) Smith Lincoln Park, Michigan

Writing devotionals, short stories and articles for the Lord is a passion of mine. But I also love the rhythm of a deep kick drum, tight snares, and harmonic melodies laced together to form a hip hop track. So, it was only a matter of time before I put the two passions together, to make my own sound.

Making music glorifying God, brings me joy.
